A Bitch About Food Stamping......

Here is an email sent in by a reader....

*****

Thank god for your site and a way to vent at the sheer stupidity of it all!!

Why am I watching the evening news, listening to a story about our countries decline and the increase in food stamps??? To many people are lazy that's why!!!

I must tell you the reason for this bitch. I had government assistance. Yes I did, I wasn't proud but I had too. When my husband started making enough I cut the apron strings. I was ECSTATIC. Yay, my own money, own food, no help! I haven't looked back and hopefully I never will.

Back to my original bitch. So, as I watch the news they are interviewing food stamp recipients. One lady lost her job and needs assistance. Ok...I'll bite. The other???? The other had 2 jobs, but 4 children and 1 grandchild. Now, that's a lot to feed but then where is the other half of the mother/father team??? Yeah, you know the answer and I don't even have to say it. My other problem??? HER HOUSE IS NICER THAN MINE!!! WTF??? And then the end all and be all....during her interview she was showing the reporter her freezer, looked pretty stocked to me, but then I only have 2 small children and a hubs gone for work all the time. She then turned slightly sideways..what the hell!! SHE HAD A BLUETOOTH PHONE HOOKED TO HER FREAKING EAR!! This is the problem I have with THESE types of food stamp recipients. When I had government assistance I had a pathetic car, a equally pathetic wardrobe and could only afford a basic home phone! Maybe if some of these people learned that you need to cut your ENTIRE budget to feed all these kids they wouldn't need food stamps. Since when is a cell phone a necessity?? It's not. It's a luxury that you get IF you can afford it. I have to say that during the interview she went on to say that what she got in food stamps helped but wasn't "enough". Yeah..I guess it wouldn't be enough, but I know that I pay about $70 for a simple cell plan. I bet that'd buy some much needed food.

Thanks for letting me vent.
Sincerely,
A bitch wearing her big girl panties.

the same people in this scenerio are the ones the government want YOU to bail out of their mortgage crisis. They made 40 grand, bought a 300 grand house (with no down payment, no credit check and are paying interest only). I have a hard enough time paying my own bills sometimes and my house value went down but my house taxes went up hundreds of dollars. Why is it I am fiscally responsible but these stupid people and the financial instituions behind them are so fucking greedy? then when the shit hits the fan, they expect hand outs? or there is debt forgiveness? I have always paid my own bills. Why can't they? And why does this administration think I should shoulder it for others who are too fucky lazy to help themselves? There are instances of families who life has screwed but not the ones I am talking about-they are screwing us big time with the government's hand in all the way.

It always amazes me when people get so much for nothing. I understand needing help temporarily (haven't most of us?), but it's the people who do stupid shit and then turn around and expect everyone else to help them out of their mess. Don't have half a dozen kids if you can't afford to feed them. If you lose your job, lose the fancy cars, the cable, the high speed internet access.

I remember getting WIC for a few years because we had one income, three kids, and we needed the help. I also remember the day I got a job and could tell them "no thanks". Even though technically, by income levels, we still qualified, we didn't accept WIC - because we were living below our means and my meager income was equal to the cost of the food WIC gave us. I didn't think "Oh, wow, now I can go buy some fabulous new clothes!!" My first thought was "Goodbye handout!" We had lived for a few years without cable, with just one car, without any extras. I wore second hand and irregular clothes, my kids got cheap shoes. But we weren't hungry, we had a roof over our heads, and we were warm.

These people probably can't sell their houses because they owe more than the house is worth, but damn, you cut every corner there is until you absolutely can cut no more before you accept government assistance.

Hubby was working (few were back in the late 70's in my area) he was also getting his Masters and in the Reserves. We had purchased a new house in the burbs. 3 kids but we wanted a better school system for them. it got so tight, I gave up my car and we as parents went without a lot of stuff for about 4 years. home made lunches in brown bags for hubby and kids. I walked everywhere (it was 5 miles to the grocery store with a kid in a stroller) but as bad as it got, I never asked for one penny from anyone. while we didn't have the luxury items available today (no cable yet in the area) I went without a new pair of jeans for several years (I only had two) grew my own veggies, mowed my own lawn etc. my house is now paid for (still here) and I am still frugal. My hobby is my joy but I am on a strict budget-so If I want more stamps or scrap materials, I cut back. I don't buy new clothes-I go to garage sales like I did before. I buy books at the used library sale. The only thing I would have a hard time giving up is my computer access but there are free spots within walking distance. I will not ever ask for anyone to support me in any way-I have taken steps to make sure that never happens. If someone needs immediate help, I am there with open arms. But not to bail them out of their greed.

You can't expect people who have fallen on hard times to conform to your particular idea of what poverty is. Perhaps she had her nice house before things got difficult and it doesn't make sense to sell it in our horrible housing market. Maybe her bluetooth phone is issued by or necessary for her job. I know this is a site to bitch, but you can't speak on some issues until you know the full story.
